Taking the Rap
Article Abstract:
It has been established that Rap1, a small GTPase, is required in nerve growth factor (NGF)-mediated differentiation. It is suggested that, after NGF stimulation, the early phase of extracellular-signal-regulated kinase (ERK) activation is mediated by Ras, while sustained activation of the pathway is attributable to activation of Rap1. It was found that the Ras- and Rap-dependent phases of ERK appear to be independent.

Signals from Ras and Rho GTPases interact to regulate expression of P21 Waf1/Cip1
Article Abstract:
The Ras group of GTPases regulate cell proliferation. Mitogenic response to certain growth factors and oncogenes can be blocked by Ras function inhibition. Activation of Ras signalling pathways can arrest cell cycle in some situations. It is shown that Rho is inhibited when signalling through the Ras-related GTPase, and active Ras induces p21 Waf1/Cip1 cyclin-dependent-kinase inhibitor.

Complementation of byr1 in fission yeast by mammalian MAP kinase kinase requires coexpression of Raf kinase
Article Abstract:
A mammalian MAP kinase kinase (MAPKK) did not complement a byr1 mutant of the yeast Scizosaccharomyces pombe, but was phosphorylated by Raf kinase and rescued the byr1 mutant's mating defect. Raf cannot activate byr1, MAPKK's S. pombe analog, so in the absence of a putative intermediate, Raf kinase appears to directly activate MAPKK, making the pathways functionally homologous.
