The effects of forest clearcut harvesting and thinning on terrestrial salamanders
Article Abstract:
There is evidence that red-backed salamanders and possibly ensatinas decline in abundance as a result of clearcut harvesting. This research, undertaken in the northern Willapa Hills, near Oakville, WA, assessed the impact of clearcut harvesting and thinning on terrestrial salamanders. It is likely that both salamanders and ensatinas are breeding in clearcut areas, however, and may recover to preharvest abundance before the next harvest. Light thinning may produce a short-term drop in the abundance of some salamander species.

Estimating forest elephant numbers with dung counts and a geographic information system
Article Abstract:
A quick and practical method of estimating forest elephant numbers is the use of dung counts. Studies in the forests of Gabon show that the number of elephant dung piles increases with distance from roads. Some 95% of dung piles are found in areas of low human density. A new method of estimating the dung pile population uses a geographic information system. The study shows that human disturbance accounts for over 50% of the variance in forest elephant distribution in Gabon.
