Asymmetry and fighting performance in the shore crab Carcinus maenas
Article Abstract:
Fluctuating asymmetry is often associated with developmental instability in some biological systems and it has been suggested that the fighting performance of asymmetric individuals is less than that of symmetric counterparts. A new study of shore crabs investigates the relationship between asymmetry and fighting performance. The study supports the theory that symmetric individuals outperform their asymmetric fellows when body size is taken into account.

How costly is fighting? Physiological effects of sustained exercise and fighting in swimming crabs, Necora puber (L.)(Brachyura, Portunidae)
Article Abstract:
The amount of tissue metabolites in haemolymph and muscle of male swimming crabs was measured to determine the physiological effects of sustained exercise and fighting. Crabs that had fought and those that had exercised had higher muscle glucose concentrations. Fighting caused the mobilization of energy reserves but the accumulation of end products of anaerobic respiration was limited.
