The evolution of multiple male traits in the yellow-browed leaf warbler
Article Abstract:
The evolution of a number of secondary sexual characteristics in male yellow-browed leaf warbler as influenced by competition and female mate choice is investigated. Color patches, song rate, body weight and territory size were considered in the analysis of mate selection among female yellow-browed leaf warblers. Results indicate that females use more than one character trait in mate selection, that the character focus varies with male behavior and that the traits necessary in mate selection are different from those important for competition.

Male and female behaviour and extra-pair paternity in the wheatear
Article Abstract:
Research was conducted to study the behavior of both males and females which may influence the frequency of extra-pair paternity in the socially monogamous passerine, the wheatear, Oenanthe oenanthe. Blood was taken from the brachial vein for paternity analysis while nests were checked daily to obtain first-egg dates. Results showed that focal males rarely leave their territory while no significant reduction in intra-pair distance was noted.

Egg rejection in a passerine bird: size does matter
Article Abstract:
Research describing the yellow-browed leaf warbler's egg discrimination behaviour is presented. Field experiments show that host rejection decisions are based on egg size variation in the clutch, and are continuously modified. This bird is a presumed former host of parasitic cuckoos, Cuculus spp.
