The gain of three mitochondrial introns identifies liverworts as the earliest land plants
Article Abstract:
Plant evolution research suggests that liverworts existed on the Earth before any other land plants. The presence or absence of three mitochondrial introns, originating from the Cox2 and nad1 gene, was established in 352 land plants. The liverwort Marchantia does not contain these introns. Genetic sequencing data in association with Southern blot hybridization results are illustrated.

Group II self-splicing introns in bacteria
Article Abstract:
Group II self-splicing introns are present in cyanobacteria and the gamma subdivision of purple bacteria, and probably elsewhere. At least one intron self-splices in vitro. These introns are widely thought to be the source of the eukaryotic nucleus's spliceosomal splicing machinery, though they are now found only in mitochondrial and chloroplast genomes.

Introns gain ground
Article Abstract:
A new study provides further support for the theory that gene segments of eukaryotes represent the insertion of mobile group II introns by showing a means by which the electrons can spread throughout the genome.
