The expandable network of ant exploration
Article Abstract:
The exploratory path of the Argentine ant depends upon group size and individual ants adapt the shape of their path, thus optimizing the discovery rate of the entire group. The shape of the path is more condensed at high group size and becomes linear as the density decreases. The coverage rate of an area is fast during the initial stages of exploration. The spreading of ants increased at low turning index. The exploratory path of three colonies of ants with different sizes are studied by computerized image analysis.

What is the function of encounter patterns in ant colonies?
Article Abstract:
The patterns of antennal contacts reveals the social organization of ant colonies. Ants can recognize their nestmates through antennal contact, and nestmate density is assessed by the rate of contacts. The contact rate increases when non-nestmates are present, or when nestmate density is high. The ecological differences among species and changes in density results in species-specific differences in patterns of antennal contacts rates.

The development of an ant colony's foraging range
Article Abstract:
A study of the foraging behavior of ants revealed negative correlations between an ant colony's foraging range and increase in colony age. Territorial behavior in ant colonies is found to be influenced by colony size effects on the frequency of encounters with neighbors and the nature of reproduction in the colonies.
