The genetics of speciation
Article Abstract:
Explaining the genetic basis for Haldane's rule has proved an intractable problem for evolutionary biologists. J.B.S. Haldane proposed in 1922 that the heterogametic offspring of two species is inviable or sterile. Recent research using Drosophila shows that the genetic causes of inviability and hybrid sterility may differ. Research in this vein may eventually resolve whether specific speciation genes exist or whether reproductive isolation may be explained by other evolutionary factors affecting fertility and viability.

Correlation between male song repertoire, extra-pair paternity and offspring survival in the great reed warbler
Article Abstract:
The female great reed warblers choose their mates depending on the quality of the territory and song-repertoire size. The two factors decide the harem size and reproductive success. The birds are polygynous and the females obtain extra-pair fertilizations (EPF) from other males with larger song-repertoires than their mate. The song-repertoire size is directly related to the post-fledging survival of offspring. EPF provides genetic benefits to the offspring.

Hybrid costs avoided
Article Abstract:
A new study suggests that some birds may be able to counter the negative effects of hybridization. Offspring resulting from the mating of two different species tend to have poor fertility. However, a study of collared and pied flycatchers suggests there are mechanisms which work against this.
