The greening of the green revolution
Article Abstract:
Although agriculture has met the food needs of the majority of the world's population it has been at the price of contamination of ground-waters, eutrophication of rivers and coastal marine ecosystems and release of greenhouse gases. Practices that provide sustainable yields with fewer environmental costs are being sought. Drinkwater, Wagoner and Sarrantonio have reported on alternative methods of maize growth which maintain yields and increase soil fertility. These include a manure-based system involving the feeding of grasses and legumes to cattle, and fixing nitrogen by incorporating legumes into the soil.

Productivity and sustainability influenced by biodiversity in grassland ecosystems
Article Abstract:
Biodiversity increases plant productivity and resource utilization in grassland ecosystems. Analysis of 147 grassland plots indicates that high nutrient utilization with diverse species reduces leaching loss of soil nitrogen and increases sustainability of nutrient cycling and soil fertility. The plots with greater variety of species completely utilized soil mineral nitrogen, the primary limiting factor.
