The interaction of male and female reproductive strategies and paternity in wild Japanese macaques, Macaca fuscata
Article Abstract:
Research into the interaction of male and female reproductive techniques in wild Japanese macaques, Macaca fuscata, is presented. Male 'attractivity rank' was found to be negatively correlated with male dominance rank. It is possible that female mate choice at ovulation is not the same as mate choice over the whole mating season.

Sexual selection in Japanese macaques I: female mate choice or male sexual coercion?
Article Abstract:
Mating outcomes in many animal species may be produced by the interaction of factors such as male sexual coercion, male-male competition and female mate choice. Evidence suggests that such factors are important determinants of successful reproductive outcomes in social groups of Japanese macaques. A study of a confined group of macaques held at Kyoto University's Primate Research Institute, seeks to assess the possible influence of sexual coercion and the validity of several mate-choice behaviours. It is tentatively suggested that females choose mates by maintaining a proximity to preferred males and avoiding others.

Sexual selection in Japanese macaques II: female mate choice and male-male competition
Article Abstract:
A study designed to determine the independent effects of female mate choice and male-male competition on mating and reproduction in a group of captive Japanese macaques is described. The results, using endocrine, genetic and behavioural data, show that when potentially conflicting strategies are involved, female mate strategies can prevail over male-male competition when determining sexual and reproductive outcomes.
