The motivation of non-nutritive sucking in calves, Bos taurus
Article Abstract:
Non-nutritive sucking in calves is in response to the taste of milk rather than an internal source of motivation. Some properties of Lorenzian process are seen during non-nutritive sucking by precocial calves. Sucking motivation decreases more by sucking behaviour than by milk consumption which is not fully independent of hunger. The intake of less than the normal volume of milk does not affect their subsequent non-nutritive sucking but calves that fed less sucked more and those without meals increased sucking.

Exploration in the pig may not be endogenously motivated
Article Abstract:
It is hypothesized that piglets are motivated toexplore by an endogenous mechanism, rather than as a reaction to novelty. In line with this, three lines of evidence in favor of an internal source of exploratory motivation are given, but none of them is convincing. It is always easy to think up an alternative explanation for a particular animal behavior, based on external causes. But, it is more fruitful if the documentation begins on what the internal causes are.

Inquisitive exploration in pigs
Article Abstract:
Pig behavior calls for an endogenous exploratory system which is triggered byexternal stimuli. However, abnormal behavior patterns are manifested in pigletsin unchanging featureless environments even when food is constantly available. Therefore, the hypothesis that hunger brings about abnormal behavior is erroneous. Moreover, these results emphasize the need for piglets to be in an environment that allows adequate exploration.
