The return of the golden fleece
Article Abstract:
For the first time since 1976, when vicuna became a protected species, its fleece will be legally available, following an agreement between Peruvian president Alberto Fujimori and Loro Piana's textile company. Vicuna, which inhabit the high Andes, is the smallest and most beautiful of the camel family. It came to the brink of extinction in the mid-1960s because of blind hunting. The Indians of the Andes have permission to breed vicunas and collect their fleece humanely, with big penalties otherwise. There are about 100,000 vicunas in Peru and 60,000 in other parts of South America.

Fixing a symbiotic circle
Article Abstract:
A 536-kb plasmid sequenced from a strain of Rhizobium has a range of genes which do not have many similarities at all with those which have been identified through other bacterial genome sequencing work. The plasmid pNGR234a was found to have 17 potential nodboxes, with at least 11 being symbiotically active. It was discovered that genes downstream of the nodboxes which had not previously been identified include genes which may play a role in polysaccharide biosynthesis and protein secretion.
