The secret life of the dipole
Article Abstract:
It is possible to establish that there is a force on a magnetic dipole in an electromagnetic field other than the one which has been acknowledged and studied since the 19th century. To understand this new force, it is important to understand that for this dipole the kinetic momentum differs from the canonical momentum p. The force exists even when the electric and magnetic fields do not vary in position, and is dependent on the electric field. It is doubly nonlinear, as it does not reverse in direction if the electromagnetic field strength or the magnetic moment are reversed.

Coupled ocean-atmosphere dynamics in the Indian Ocean during 1997-98
Article Abstract:
Detailed research into the strong seasonal anomalies in sea surface temperatures, sea surface heights, precipitation and winds that took place in the Indian Ocean area in 1997 to 1998 indicates that these anomalies may not have been an exaggerated response to the strong 1997 to 1998 El Nino. It is suggested that the Indian Ocean shows strong coupled ocean-atmosphere-land interactions that are self-maintaining. These interactions are able to produce substantial perturbations to the annual cycle.

A dipole mode in the tropical Indian Ocean
Article Abstract:
An analysis of observational data accumulated since the 1950s indicates a dipole mode in the Indian Ocean. This mode depends strongly on the state of the system created by the monsoonal circulation, and it is therefore expected that the variability of the monsoons would have a substantial impact on this mode. It is clear that the dipole mode has significant implications for climate variability in other regions surrounding the Indian Ocean.
