The shadow of genetic injustice
Article Abstract:
An analysis of the possible impacts of the Human Genome Project is presented. The mapping of the entire human genome would allow immense progress in the diagnosis of diseases and in their treatment. Nevertheless, it is important to institute measures to prevent abuses of genetic mapping tests. For instance, practical ability assessment based on genetic maps may be acceptable for employment purposes. However, genetic testing should not be allowed if a large ethnic group would suffer as a result, or if it is used to deny a person employment based on a genetic disability that is expected to crop up in the future.

Molecular cloning of the olfactory neuronal transcription factor Olf-1 by genetic selection in yeast
Article Abstract:
Isolation of complementary DNA for the transcriptional activator, Olf-1, which binds the regulatory sequences of several olfactory specific genes, has been done through genetic selection in yeast. A new helix-loop-helix motif, functioning as a homodimer, was found in the Olf-1 protein, present only in the olfactory neurons and their precursors. This observation indicates that Olf-1 may be the first member of a family of related proteins regulating cellular differentiation in various neurosal tissues.
