The use of fields at night by wintering American woodcock
Article Abstract:
Surveys undertaken since 1968 show a continuing decline in the American woodcock, with the main reasons for the fall thought to be habitat loss and low winter survival rates. A new study of woodcock in the Georgia Piedmont investigates the sizes and types of fields preferred by woodcock during winter evenings and determines frequency of use depending upon age and sex. The study shows that fields of around 5.5 ha are in more frequent use than smaller fields and fallow/old fields and seed tree-clearcuts are the preferred nocturnal habitats. No difference is noted in field use by sex or age class.

Survival rates of American woodcock wintering in the Georgia Piedmont
Article Abstract:
Falling survival rates of American woodcock on their wintering ground may contribute to the progressive decline of the species east of the Appalachians. A study of the night-time habitat use of wintering woodcock in the Georgia Piedmont has provided data that allows survival rates to be estimated. It is concluded that habitat alteration and loss may contribute to low survival rates in winter.
