Thermal-expansion materials not so new
Article Abstract:
The NZP-CTP structural family, which has considerable significance for thermal expansion, was overlooked by Robert Cahn when commenting on work by Sleight's group. Instead, Cahn focused on the fact that phase ZrW2O8 has a negative thermal expansion, a fact which was already widely known. Furthermore, it was misguided to claim that the crystallographic anisotropy of CTE in the eucryptite, spodumene and cordeirite family restricts the value of materials in the NZP-CTP family.

Full sintering of powdered-metal bodies in a microwave field
Article Abstract:
A number of factors play an important role in the total microwave heating of powdered metals, according to research involving the microwave sintering of powdered metals to full density. These factors include the presence of SiC suspector rods and the size and nature of the sample placed in the centre of the alumina tube. The ability to sinter metals with microwaves should be useful in the preparation of high-performance metal parts required in many industries.

Hydrothermal growth of diamond in metal-C-H2O systems
Article Abstract:
The formation of diamonds via hydrothermal synthesis was analyzed during diamond-on-diamond deposition under hydrothermal conditions in the presence of nickel and vitreous carbon. Hydrothermal convection at 800 degrees centrigrade led to the formation of small hydrothermal diamond aggregates. Analysis of the diamonds via Raman scattering and electron microscopy also indicated the presence of a novel 15-micrometre anhedral diamond.
