Thin excuses for French nuclear tests
Article Abstract:
France's plan to perform a series of nuclear weapons' tests in the Pacific has brought opposition from various quarters of world. The French President, Jacques Chirac, supports the planned tests saying that they are necessary to check whether the weapons would still be usage after keeping them stored for some time and would provide information for future weapon designing. However, the weapons designing would be irrelevant in a non-nuclear world which the Comprehensive Test-Ban Treaty is trying to create and the tests violate the treaty.

Winning a nuclear test-ban by stealth?
Article Abstract:
Congress acted commendably by inserting a provision for a nuclear test-ban into a bill that appropriated money for energy and water projects. The bill, which President Bush approved despite misgivings, requires a nine-month ban on nuclear weapons testing until mid-summer 1992 and also calls for a permanent ban to start in 1996. Congress's action is laudable because a nuclear test ban is crucial to extending the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, which will lapse after 1995 if the signatory countries do not agree to extend it.

France and the nuclear illusion
Article Abstract:
The proposed testing of nuclear weapons by France in the Pacific has been criticized by environmentalists and has damaged the relations of France with countries such as Australia, New Zealand and Japan. France's decision will affect the success of the test-ban treaty in 1996 as countries such as India and Pakistan will also want to develop their nuclear weapons before signing the treaty.
