Three-dimensional self-assembly of millimetre-scale components
Article Abstract:
Molecular self-assembly requires the assembly of components that are much larger than the molecules using microelectronic mechanical systems and devices. The major technique employed in constructing microstructures is photolithography. However, it has some limitations such as the inability to produce three-dimensional structures easily, the generation of metastable structures and the limited use for certain set of materials. Self-assembled monolayer molecular films are applied to the surfaces of the objects to bind the components permanently.

Polymer microstructures formed by moulding in capillaries
Article Abstract:
Microstructures can be fabricated in polymeric materials using micromolding in capillaries, a new procedure using an elastomeric master with a continuous network of channels that creates a negative replica. The master must be unreactive, have a low surface free energy and be elastomeric. The tested master is poly(dimethylsiloxane).

Dynamic self-assembly of magnetized, millimetre-sized objects rotating at a liquid-air interface
Article Abstract:
The dynamic patterns which are formed by the self-organization processes of millimetre-sized magnetic discs which are subjected to a rotating magnetic field at the interface of air and a liquid are discussed.
