Thymocyte apoptosis induced by p53-dependent and independent pathways
Article Abstract:
Various agents are responsible for initiating apoptosis and expression of the tumor suppressor p53 gene may also be a factor. Short-term thymocyte cultures from mice were used to study the role of p53 expression in apoptosis of cells from the thymus cortex. Introduction of ionizing radiation, glucocorticoid methylprednisolone, etoposide or calcium induced apoptosis in wild type thymocytes. On the other hand, radiation or etoposide did not induce apoptosis in homozygous null p53 thymocytes. Results showed that p53 was a factor in apoptosis when induced by agents causing DNA-strand breakage.

Deacetylation of p53 modulates its effect on cell growth and apoptosis
Article Abstract:
Research is presented describing how p53, a tumour-suppressor and a transcriptional factor, has its activity modulated by protein stability and post-translational modifications that include acetylation. The deacetylation of this gene is mediated by a complex that contains an histone deacetylase-1.

Virus-mediated killing of cells that lack p53 activity
Article Abstract:
Research is presented concerning the influence of tumor-suppressor protein p53 in the prevention of cell death. The selective apoptosis of the adeno-associated virus in cells lacking active p53 is discussed.
