A refractory HIMU component in the sources of island-arc magma
Article Abstract:
Isotopic analysis of magma samples from the Philippine Sea region of the Pacific Ocean has clarified how island-arc magma may derive from basin magma. HIMU, an endmember component in ocean-island basalts (OIB), also contributes to the formation of island-arc basalt. However, the refractory nature of HIMU causes it to be only partially mixed with the lithosphere as it emerges from the mantle to form magma which then cools into basalt. This differential mixing of HIMU thus distinguishes arc magma from basin magma.

When did India hit Asia?
Article Abstract:
Biostratigraphic analyses of the Western frontier regions of Pakistan and the geologic mapping of sediments overlapping the suture between India and the old oceanic terranes of Asian continents reveal the absolute age of the rocks in this region to be 57 Myr. Hence plate tectonics and collision of northwest India and Asia must have preceded this period, occurring at about 45 Myr ago.
