Time for determination and hope in Russia
Article Abstract:
There now seem to be good prospects for the effective reform of Russian science. The government has made a firm commitment to implementing changes in the way scientific work is managed, and funding for science seems to be being placed on a much firmer basis. There are also indications that the Russian Academy of Sciences is prepared to align itself with changes within the scientific community. However, Russian science is still dominated in certain areas by old-fashioned bureaucratic regulations, and real progress will not be made until strategically targeted investment in science is introduced.

Russian nuclear accident opens up military complex
Article Abstract:
Russian authorities were forced to reveal the existence of an active plutonium reprocessing plant in the city of Tomsk-7 after a plant explosion in Apr 6, 1993 which could have tremendous health and environmental consequences. The plant was built in the 1940s to manufacture fuel for nuclear weapons. Russian authorities said that three of the six reactors are kept active to provide fuel for civilian nuclear power plants. The extent of radioactive damage was not clear, while Russian officials issued conflicting statements about the kinds of radioactive materials stored in the plant.
