Top-down gain control of the auditory space map by gaze control circuitry in the barn owl
Article Abstract:
Space-specific, top-down regulation of auditory responses by gaze control circuitry in the barn owl suggests that the central nervous system uses a common strategy for regulating sensory gain across modalities, brain areas and classes of vertebrate species. It is shown that electrical micro-stimulation applied to gaze control circuitry regulates the gain of midbrain auditory responses, providing a path for discovering mechanisms that underlie top-down gain control in the central nervous system.

Article Abstract:
The defects in otoferlin, a calcium sensor for neurotransmitter release in nerve function, are found to be responsible for an inherited type of deafness in mammals, called DFNB9. Otoferlin is involved in the correct operation of the synapse between the hair cell and the afferent nerve fibre and it also binds in a calcium-dependent manner to SNARE proteins, highly conserved molecules that are needed for the release of neurotransmitters and for other events requiring fusion of membranes.
