Tracking the rupture of the M(sub w) = 9.3 Sumatra earthquake over 1,150 km at teleseismic distance

Article Abstract:

A modification of the standard array-seismological approach is presented, and it is shown that it is possible to track the propagating rupture front of the Sumatra earthquake over a total rupture length of 1150 km. The estimated average rupture speed is 2.3-2.7 km s(super -1) and the total duration of rupture is at least 430 s, and probably between 480 and 500.

Speed and size of the Sumatra earthquake

Article Abstract:

The seismological results reveal that Indonesia's devastating Sumatra-Andaman earthquake on 26 December 2004 was 2.5 times larger than initial reports suggested. They indicate that it slowly released its energy by slip along a 1,200-km fault, generating a long rupture that contributed to the subsequent tsunami.

Giant returns in time

Article Abstract:

The behaviour of a seismic fault in Chile seemed to confound predictions of how often giant earthquakes should recur. An examination of a 2,000-year record of tsunami deposits in the region clarifies matters and reveals that it has an average recurrence interval of about 300 years.
