Turning the corner toward recovery
Article Abstract:
Congress passed the Endangered Species Act of 1973 (ESA) to control the extinction of wild plants and animals and ensure that future generations will not have a biologically impoverished world. There are 1,650 wildlife species listed under the ESA as being endangered worldwide. Seven species or less than 1% have later been classified as extinct. Preventing the extinction of the remaining 99% has been attributed as one of the biggest accomplishments of ESA. This is just a small step towards the ultimate goal of ESA, which is the restoration of threatened wildlife into viable and stable species.

The ups and downs of COP10
Article Abstract:
Implementation of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) is important to global attempts to halting trade in threatened species. There has been active participation by non-governmental organizations (NGOs), but time for debate has been limited due to the number of proposals being considered. Key results of COP10 pertain to invasive species, and illegal trade in bear specimens.
