UK chemists seek a greater role in policing arms ban
Article Abstract:
British chemists have asked the government to allow them to have their say regarding the enforcement of restrictions on research materials that can be used to make chemical weapons. The government has asked that all chemists using such materials register with the Department of Trade and Industry, so as to enable the inclusion of these restrictions in the Chemical Weapons Convention. Although research chemists support the convention, they are concerned over research setbacks that might occur. The creation of a statutory advisory committee is proposed.

Forecasters seek better data on work patterns of scientists
Article Abstract:
Governments would be more likely to ensure that the supply of scientists matches demand by improving analysis of employment statistics than by extrapolating those statistics. A meeting of employment forecasters in London, sponsored by the Science Policy Support Group, focused on the poor record of central planning as a method for predicting how many scientists will be needed. However, the lack of employment data and the difficulty of comparing one country's data with another's are impeding better analysis.

Italy backs Third World science body..
Article Abstract:
The government in Italy is committed to financing the Third World Academy of Sciences (TWAS), which will enable the academy to boost its operating budget and increase attempts to stimulate scientific excellence in Third World countries. An annual grant previously covered the operating costs of the academy, but this has fallen in value over recent years. The academy was set up in 1983 by Abdus Salam, physicist and Nobel laureate.
