Can research benefits be proved?
Article Abstract:
Researchers should respond carefully to Representative George Brown's suggestion that the federal government should cut or eliminate aid to basic research that fails to benefit society. Brown, chairman of the House Committee on Science, Space and Technology, believes that the economic downturn may force the government to reconsider the policy that shielded basic research from budget cuts in the 1980s. Researchers should answer Brown by pointing out that basic research can have tangible benefits such as educating young people whose skills will be vital to economic renewal.

Agenda for a US president
Article Abstract:
The winner of the Nov 1992 presidential election will have to reverse the economic and social despair now gripping the US without weakening the country's commitment to scientific and technological research. President Bush, Bill Clinton and Ross Perot said little about research during the campaign, but once the result is in this disregard must end. The winner will have to deal with two salient problems: the poor condition of public education and the tendency to allow nationalism to affect the appropriation of funds for research.

Bring back Tsongas
Article Abstract:
Presidential candidates George Bush, Bill Clinton and Jerry Brown sent representatives to a Council on Research and Technology forum to discuss the candidates' positions on science, but the representatives' inept statements did little to enlighten voters. Clinton's representative earned the dubious distinction of doing the least to make his candidate look ridiculous. Paul Tsongas's return as a candidate would improve what is shaping up as a poor choice for voters as far as science is concerned.
