UK panel warns of crisis in clinical research careers
Article Abstract:
Pressure on the funding of academic posts by the National Health Service (NHS), the impact of changes on the structure of medical education, uncertainty about whether academic achievements are related to locally agreed pay-scales and the question of how the parity between NHS consultants and their colleagues in universities will be maintained have created uncertainty about research career prospects for medically qualified people in UK. This has urged the British government to set up a major review of clinical research careers.

Brussels seeks tighter control over European funds for Russian science
Article Abstract:
EU Commissioner of research Edith Cresson wants to focus research funding for scientists in Russia and the former Soviet Union countries on projects that would produce quick economic benefits for those countries. The EU has allotted ECU250 million for research funding in 1995. Cresson has also proposed to take over the administration of the funds of INTAS, an international body formed in 1993 by EU and other European countries. The INTAS has been criticized for being too slow in implementing projects.
