UK to set up advisory panel on genetic data
Article Abstract:
The British Secretary of Health, Virginia Bottomley announced the government's plan to set up a national advisory committee to decide on the regulation of genetic information. Clinical geneticists, scientists, diagnostic test manufacturers and the public will be consulted before setting up the committees. The proposal has been welcomed by members of the Nuffield Council of Bioethics and those people who fear the use of genetic information by insurance agencies for deciding the insurance premiums.

DNA database proposal gets cautious welcome in UK
Article Abstract:
The Royal Commission on Criminal Justice has advocated the creation of a national database of DNA samples, from all criminals convicted of a major offense and possibly from everyone arrested. THe latter would be maintained anonymously, outside the police organization, and be used to study characteristics in the population. Some scientists and civil libertarians have protested the suggestion, on the grounds that the technology is immature.

UK takes pride in 'principled pragmatism.' (bioethics in United Kingdom)
Article Abstract:
The UK has carefully avoided an excessively legislative approach to medical ethics issues, with action generally being reactive rather than proactive. There has been strong reliance on professional codes of conduct and voluntary guidelines, with little reinforcement in law. However, there has also been an increasing awareness of the need for a more institutional approach to the ethical matters resulting from biomedical developments.
