UN climate change report turns up the heat
Article Abstract:
A research report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change on the impact of climate change is creating debate. A chapter in the report states that the cost to curb greenhouse gas emission may exceed the cost of damage from environmental degradation. But the summary, written by experts from the developing countries, contradicts this statement. It states that the estimates on which the calculated cost of damage is based are far low for the developing countries, and hence the conclusion of the chapter is invalid. The report is to be presented to the United Nations.

Meeting warms to binding climate agreement
Article Abstract:
A meeting in Geneva, Switzerland, of representatives of countries which signed the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change came close to finalizing the agreement that penalizes countries which fail to meet set targets for reducing emissions of greenhouse gases. Under the convention agreed at the Earth Summit in 1992, developed countries will reduce greenhouse gas emissions to 1990 levels by 2000. The agreement, however, was not legally binding. Thus, a legal instrument is needed to ensure compliance with agreed targets.

Climate panel confirms human role in warming, fights off oil states
Article Abstract:
The UN Intergovernment Panel on Climate Change suggests that humans influence global climate. According to a preliminary report presented by Work Group 1 during the panel's meeting in Madrid, Spain, there is a significant correlation between the increase in global temperature and global sea levels and human activity. However, some delegates to the conference disagreed and claimed that the panel's report is unsubstantiated and called on members of the panel to provide stronger evidence to prove their conclusion.
