US universities create bridges between physics and biology
Article Abstract:
Several top US research universities are planning to create new institutes which will bring together physical and biomedical scientists. Stanford University is planning a research centre for 50 faculty members covering disciplines such as applied physics and clinical medicine. Princeton University is planning an interdisciplinary genomics institute. The moves reflect the growing belief that physical and biomedical sciences should be more closely linked in both research and teaching.

Scientists seek support from Mexican public
Article Abstract:
There is a lack of confidence in Mexico's scientists and the problem is partly cultural, as Mexico has inherited the European tradition of the scientist as academician, rather than as an inventor and entrepreneur. There are no strong traditions of investing in research and development in universities. Programmes throughout research establishments to forge closer links with industry are emerging however.

Nobel Prizes go to Caltech chemist, CERN physicist: physics prize
Article Abstract:
Georges Charpak of CERN, the European Laboratory for Particle Physics, has been awarded the 1992 Nobel Prize in physics for his design of particle detectors. His 1968 design of the multiwire proportional chamber provided greater spatial resolution of particle trajectory and a million-fold improvement in detection rate over previous detectors.
