German science fights animal rights bill
Article Abstract:
Plans to alter Germany's constitution to include provision to protect the rights of animals are being resisted by the country's main research agencies, along with pharmaceutical and chemical companies. The change would give animals the right to be respected as fellow creatures and protected from avoidable pain. Those opposed to the changes argue that it would damage biomedical research.

"Integration: Ernst & Young's Eighth Annual Life Sciences Report 2001" reveals that although the financial state of life sciences research in Europe has greatly improved, European research in biotechnology still lags behind that of the US. The report claims that the gap is widening because the US biotechnology companies are bigger and wealthier than those in Europe.
