Undermethylation associated with retroelement activation and chromosome remodelling in an interspecific mammalian hybrid
Article Abstract:
Retroelement invasion and amplification in centromeric hererochromatin could be a widespread phenomenon in mammalian hybrids, according to research based on an interspecific mammalian hybrid, Macropus eugenii x Wallabia bicolor. It was possible to demonstrate the occurrence of genome-wide undermethylation, retroviral element amplification and chromosome remodelling in this hybrid. It seems that deficient methylation of the genome and activation of retroelements leading to gross changes in genome structure do not have an impact on the action of developmentally significant genes in these interspecific marsupial hybrids.

Speciation driven by natural selection in Drosophila
Article Abstract:
Reinforcement being responsible for sexual isolation between incipient species as part of natural selection has recently been questioned. However, the example of the fruitfly Drosophila pseudoobscura compared to Drosophila persimilis supports reinforcement because any other reason for the sexual isolation is more questionable. D. pseudoobscura therefore most likely evolved increased the sexual isolation from D. persimilis, by natural selection against maladaptive hybridization in the form of sterile hybrid males.

Species status of hybridizing oaks
Article Abstract:
Research concerning the extensive hybridization which occurs between the Quercus robur and Quercus petraea species of European oak trees is presented. The maintenance of species differences in spite of interspecific gene flow is discussed.
