Unequal subfamily proportions among honey bee queen and worker brood
Article Abstract:
A new study investigates the unequal family proportions among honey bee queen and worker broods to determine whether the kin selection theory can be supported. Three randomly selected experimental colonies were established away from the main colony, which was left queenless. Natal broods from the nucleus colonies were routinely placed in the main colony and a sample of the queen pupae and neighboring worker pupae was extracted. Analysis shows unequal subfamily relatedness, with some subfamilies being reproductively more successful than others. It is concluded that choice of queen larvae for rearing is based on genetic attractiveness.

Risk-indifferent foraging behaviour in honeybees
Article Abstract:
A study is presented in which the role of variance in reward volume on the foraging behaviour of honeybees is investigated, by training bees to collect sucrose from four artificial feeders. The results showed that the bees were able to discriminate between feeders according to the amount of reward gained.
