Unsolved problems of noise
Article Abstract:
Random noise was one of the subjects discussed at the UPoN'99 meeting in Adelaide, Australia. Consideration was given to the need for investigations of the mechanisms that produce noise and the impact it has on systems subject to it. Speakers included Riccardo Mannella of the University of Pisa, Italy, who described experiments that have confirmed the validity of the logarithmic susceptibility.

Detection of doubled shot noise in short normal-metal/superconductor junctions
Article Abstract:
Fluctuations in electrical current due to the discrete nature of charge carrying particles (shot noise) double, as predicted in theory, with double charges. The effect is not dependent on phase coherence.

Crackling noise
Article Abstract:
Issues are presented concerning the occurrence of crackling noise in magnets. The use of scaling and renormalization group collapses to explain crackling noise in a model of a magnet is discussed.
