Unusual phonation covarying song characteristics and song preferences in female zebra finches
Article Abstract:
The choice between unmanipulated song motifs containing and lacking inspiratory phonation were offered to female zebra finches, in operant two-choice preference tests. Song motifs containing inspiratory phonation were not preferred, both when songs were randomly paired and when motif length was controlled for, implying that the unusual trait does not impact significantly upon song attractiveness in an intersexual context.

Article Abstract:
Measuring their approach to the speakers tests the reaction of males to songs with and without the terminal flourish in a dual speaker playback design. Results suggest that males and females may perceive aspects of chaffinch song structure differently.
