Feeding interruptions, diurnal mass changes and daily routines of behaviour in the zebra finch
Article Abstract:
Research was conducted to study daily changes in body mass, fat reserves, diurnal organization of conduct, and crop contents in the zebra finch, Taeniopygia guttata, in association with food availability. Experimental data were analyzed by mixed-model analysis variance. Results showed that zebra finches respond to unpredictable interruptions in food supply by reducing energy-consuming activities rather than adjusting their energy reserve levels.

Operant conditioning, song learning and imprinting to taped song in the zebra finch
Article Abstract:
Young male zebra finches were found to copy and learn a taped song when they could control the stimulus, imitating more than birds with no control over whether the song was played. Song stimulus appears to have a reinforcing effect on young songbirds. The operant conditioning methods of this study permitted assessment of the extent of song imprinting, with a high level of precision, since the finches themselves could control the stimuli.

The effects of novel odour and color cues on food acceptance by the zebra finch, Taeniopygia guttata
Article Abstract:
An interaction of novel color and novel odor cues creates a synergistic aversive reaction, which are not tested empirically with passerine species but account for about 60 percent of all bird species. The reactions of a passerine model, the zebra finch to novel color and novel odor cues are investigated within food by measuring latencies to make contact with and to eat it.
