Usefulness of the Umbrella Species Concept as a Conservation Tool
Article Abstract:
Umbrella species are defined as those for which conservation efforts are expected to provide protection for other co-occurring species in a given habitat. Analysis suggests that conservation efforts using the umbrella species concept may not extend protection to other species due to ecological factors not relevant to umbrella species. Findings are contrasted to the focal species approach.

Protected Areas and Prospects for Endangered Species Conservation in Canada
Article Abstract:
Findings show that while reserves are useful in protecting endangered species, conservation efforts should be integrated with urban and agricultural land-use policies in order to optimize their effectiveness.
