Using radar to estimate populations and assess habitat associations of marbled murrelets
Article Abstract:
High-frequency marine radar was used to track threatened marbled murrelet populations on Vancouver Island, British Columbia, from 1996 to 1998, to determine habitat selection and establish radar inventory protocols. Findings include seasonal variations in watershed population numbers, with higher counts at dawn rather than at dusk. Logging was found to noticeably reduce murrelet numbers.
