Visualization of Bloch waves and domain walls
Article Abstract:
Bloch's theory of wave propagation in periodic structures is useful in optics, acoustics and hydrodynamics. However the solution is not stable against a small amount of disorder, particularly in one-dimensional systems. Liquid surface waves where extended Bloch states and localized domain walls are seen alternately were used in two-dimensional systems. This used the phenomenon occurring when boundary meniscus of vertically vibrating liquid vessel results in a parasitic surface wave.
