Voice of US science struggles to be heard
Article Abstract:
The National Academy of Sciences and its associated bodies, as well as panels of experts ensure that the voice of science is heard in the corridors of power. However, over the past year this voice had trouble getting itself heard. Technical objectivity is being supplanted by the tendency for interested parties in political disputes over technical issues to ask not 'what do the scientist say?' but 'who are they' and not 'what do they want?' but 'who pays their salaries?'. Consequently, the public are demanding for openness in government risk assessment processes.

A physicist joins the race for Congress
Article Abstract:
Physicist Rush Holt gained an easy victory in a primary election in Jun 1998, and is now Democratic nominee for the 12th district of New Jersey. If he is successful in Nov 1998, he will be the fourth PhD scientist in Congress. He has wide-reaching science policy experience, and has gained considerable support among fellow scientists. He is fighting Republican Michael Pappas, whom he is seeking to portray as an extremist with a questionable voting record.
