Waldegrave says White Paper will not seek radical changes
Article Abstract:
UK cabinet minister for science William Waldegrave has hinted on the contents of the forthcoming White Paper on British science and technology policy in a meeting at Imperial College, London organized by Save British Science. Waldegrave has suggested that he will support a policy that will ensure cooperation between government, the research councils and the scientific community. In addition, he has hinted that the White Paper will contain measures that will encourage the private sector to invest more in research. Waldgrave has indicated that both applied and basic researches are fine, provided that the work is excellent, interesting and educational.

Waldegrave wants to carve up SERC and create stronger political links
Article Abstract:
The British government has proposed to create a director general for research councils and to split the Science and Engineering Research Council (SERC). The director general in the government's Office of Science and Technology (OST) will take direct responsibility for the work of the research councils. William Waldegrave, Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster and the cabinet minister responsible for science, wants scientific research to be a part of politics.

UK provides 'step increase' in funding for its science base
Article Abstract:
Britain's Labour government is to invest a further 700 million pounds sterling into the science base during the next three years, meaning an increase of 7.3% in research funding. This will be complemented by a further 400 million pounds sterling from the Wellcome Trust. 600 million pounds sterling will be spent on building and refurbishing university laboratories. A further 400 million pounds sterling will be available to research councils.
