UK debates public's role in science advice
Article Abstract:
The British government has received conflicting advice on the extent of consumer participation in advising on regulations, monitoring and control of genetically modified crops. The House of Commons Environmental Audit Select Committee's report proposes that members of the public should be involved, but the House of Commons Science and Technology Select Committee argues that scientific advice should be provided free of any direct input from environmentalist or consumer representatives.

Biosafety code gathers pace through bilateral agreements
Article Abstract:
Argentina and UK signed a bilateral agreement on Sep. 8, 1995 for the adoption of guidelines for the transport and use of genetically engineered items prepared under the United Nations Environment Programme. However the US, Germany and Australia have criticized this move because it strictly regulates their domestic industry. Since the 1980s the Argentinean public has been concerned about biosafety. A similar agreement between Costa Rica and the Netherlands is also expected.
