When a vaccine is safe

The inappropriate use of antibiotics has allowed microbes to become resistant to many common treatment, creating serious health-care problems and public suspicion of vaccines could undermine programmes aimed at eradicating particular diseases. A campaign claiming the first Lyme disease vaccine caused side effects, including autoimmunity caused sales to plummet, and the manufacturer GlaxoSmithKline withdrew the vaccine in 2002.
