Who rules the park? Africa's lions fight disease and displacement
Article Abstract:
African parks and reserves have become islands surrounded by agriculture and human development, two factors hostile to the lion population. Many of the most well-known lion populations have no more than 50 individuals each, and only a small portion of these are engaged in active breeding. Inbreeding has many negative effects and can seriously hinder reproduction. The trophy hunting industry is another threat to the African lion. Despite all these threats, lions at least in the larger reserves should last for some time yet.

Lions of the Gir Forest
Article Abstract:
A population of free-ranging lions lives in the thorn forest of Gir, in the state of Gujarat on western India's Saurashtra peninsula. This Asian lion is a member of the subspecies Panthera leo persica and diverged from African lions many thousands of years ago. These lions live mainly on wild prey. They have recovered from the brink of extinction but their status remains precarious. Frequent monitoring, strict protection and scientific management are essential if the Asian lion is to last.
