Photonic crystals: putting a new twist on light
Article Abstract:
Photonic crystals are new optical materials with periodic variations in dielectric constant that possess a range of forbidden frequencies called photonic bandgap. These crystals have the ability to manipulate a photon which gives a new dimension in their ability to mould the properties of light. Their structures need to be fabricated through microlithography techniques such as electron-beam and x-ray lithography.

Quantum physics: Total surveillance
Article Abstract:
Researchers have observed a single photon in a sequence of about 100 consecutive measurements, recording it from the instant of its birth to the moment of its death. A quantum non-demolition technique is used for the rapidly evolving field of quantum computing.

Quantum leap from light to atoms
Article Abstract:
Quantum teleportation has emerged as an important tool in quantum-information science. It demonstrates the transfer of a quantum state from a light pulse onto a collection of atoms by achieving teleportation between two objects of different nature.
