World Bank calls for a fairer deal on patents and knowledge
Article Abstract:
The World Bank's report Knowledge for Development, argues that there are risks of shifting bargaining power towards the producers of knowledge and increasing the knowledge gap between developing and industrialized countries, with the increasingly strict IPR. The report identifies knowledge as the central factor to improving health and living standards, and it argues that IPR is not a suitable mechanism to stimulate research in areas such as health and medicine.

The seed-storing corvid Clark's nutcracker learns geometric relationships among landmarks
Article Abstract:
Research shows that the Nucifraga columbiana bird accurately determines a midway point between two landmarks using directional bearings despite variations in interlandmark distance. The nutcrackers continue to find the midway point in experiments where the landmarks are rotated by 15 or 45 degrees centigrade. They appear to use a single landmark as a reference point in 90 degree rotations.
