Young formation age of a mantle plume source
Article Abstract:
A study of the geochemistry of the Ninetyeast plume track is reported. The results showed that strontium, neodymium and lead isotope variations over time reflect simple radioactive decay in the plume source rather than in the mantle components present. Lead isotope variations indicate that Ninetyeast plume source is a young, ephemeral feature that has persisted for less than 1 gigayear. If these results are taken as indicative of plume sources in general, there would be significant implications for the origin and persistence of plume sources and for the convective circulation rate in the mantle.

From plume head to continental lithosphere in the Arabian-Nubian shield
Article Abstract:
An analysis of the events of the rocks of the Arabian-Nubian shield show that the formation of the continental lithosphere took place during the 150 million years near the end of the Proterozoic era. The oceanic plateau, formed by the head of an upwelling mantle plume, forms continent-like characteristics by the convergence of plate and associated magmatism. Formation of the oceanic lithosphere, followed by subduction at the margins explains the calc-like affinities of the continental lithosphere.

Evolution of helium isotopes in the Earth's mantle
Article Abstract:
A novel global data compilation of ocean island basalts (OIB), representing upwelling 'plumes' from the deep mantle is presented. The data reveals striking similarities between high- (super 3)He/(super 4)He OIB and mid-ocean-ridge basalts (MORB) in terms of their trace element and Pd-Nr-Sr isotope ratios.
