Dance criticism is a continually evolving framework in which varying interpretations vie for validity. Critics negotiate dance evaluation with terms and categories that do not always accurately identify the nuance of expression in movement. Areas of contention include superfluity, practicality, and the difference between mere bodily motion and physical artistry.

Dance, gender and psychoanalysis: Martha Graham's Night Journey
Article Abstract:
The choregraphy of Martha Graham, especially the gender representation in Night Journey, is examined. Night Journey examines Oedipus from the point of view of Jocasta, Oedipus's mother and wife. The creation of all Graham's "Greek" pieces, not only Night Journey, stemmed from her interest in the psychological theory.
