Cunningham, Balanchine, and postmodern dance
Article Abstract:
Merce Cunningham's choreography, and some of George Balanchine's, is unquestionably avant-garde, and for all their reflexivity they are not post-modern, but are affiliated with an avant-garde different from the postmoderns. They are modernists rather than integrationists, whereas the aspiration to breach the barrier between art and everyday life is an identifying commitment of postmodern choreography, which is not only postmodern but also postmodernist.

Expression, rhythm and dance: a response to Gregory Scott
Article Abstract:
Gregory Scott has misinterpreted Monroe Beardsley's theory on dance and the authors believe the theory Scott has put forth is false. Scott wrongly assumes Beardsley believes dance is a sequence of motions intended to give pleasure through rhythm or expressiveness. However, Beardsley maintains that superfluity of expressiveness is the mark of dance.
