The $25,850 BMW 318ti and the $20,885 VW GTI VR6 are two fun, affordable hatchbacks. The GTI sports a 172-bhp 2.8l narrow-angle V-6, while the 318ti is powered by a 132-bhp 1895cc in-line 4. The BMW handles curves or a track much better, while the VW is roomier, more comfortable and more powerful.

Volkswagen Corrado SLC

The Volkswagen Corrado has been greatly improved with the addition of a V-6 engine. The engine provides 178 bhp and powers the Corrado to 60 mph in 6.9 seconds. The Corrado SLC also provides good traction and control, and sells for $21,840.

Volkswagen Cabrio

The new Volkswagen Cabrio is a sporty, four-seater convertible based on the Golf platform. The Cabrio is not a powerful car and its interiors could benefit from an upgrade but it has a robust feel and it is very fun to drive.
