Hot racing, cold cars: Thunderbird's demise forces Ford, and NASCAR, to adjust

The discontinuation of the Thunderbird may spell the end of Ford participation in the nearly 50-year-old Winston Cup series. One alternative for Ford is to develop a stock edition of the Taurus. The companies remaining in Winston - Chevy and Pontiac - are committed to the '98 season.

The 1996 discontinuation of the Chevrolet Caprice line leaves the Ford Crown Vic as the sole police department option until Chevy's Tahoe emerges in fall '97. The current Crown Vic cop model is base priced at $22,195, and has a top speed of 130 m.p.h. versus the civilian's 106 m.p.h.
